I got a surprised comment to my last post on my cats and their mischief with my chocolates. Swedish fishie had never heard of cats that eat chocolate. It got me thinking about the other things my cat eat that have surprised people. Both me and others.
The thing is, my cats consider themselves to be starved. I give them diet food to keep their weight down as JumJum has had some problems with urinary tract infection and I don't want us to go there again. As they are both mainly indoors and don't move around too much, I've decided to keep them both on a diet. Which means that I don't starve them, I just don't overfeed them and I give them "good" food recommended by my vet.
Occassionally they will get bits and pieces from whatever boyfriend or I are using for our own meals. (The lazy and stupid way to get them to shut up as they sound like they're about to die on the spot if they aren't given some sort of food every time we stand by the counters in the kitchen. They're "starved" enough to give me the feed-me-shrieks even when I'm doing the dishes and they can't smell or see any food at all...) Sometimes they sneak up on the counter top or on the sofa table to get at something we've forgotten there. Or something we've dropped on the floor.
On top of the really obvious ones like different kinds of meat, liver and dairy, my cats (or at least one of them) will gladly eat the following:
- raw eggs
- boiled eggs
- tomatoes
- tomato sauce and ketchup
- cucumber
- sweet corn from a can
- canned mushrooms
- fresh mushrooms
- green peas
- radishes
- apples
- nectarines
- bell peppers
- spicy sausages
- mashed potatoes
- chips
- peanuts
- chocolate
(I realize that not all of these things are good for cats, but they don't get fed the bad stuff "on purpose"...)

When my nephew was old enough to eat by himself, my sister's cat used to sit underneath the baby chair and eat whatever dropped down from his hands. Deliberately or not...
See you tonight at Fröken Garn?!
