FO - My sister's Birdie Sling

In all its glory
The bag in all its glory...

(I'm including a warning here!!! The pictures show a looot of cat hair, so be careful if you're allergic...)

Pattern: Amy Butler's Birdie Sling

Fabrics: As usual, I don't know...

Project time: End of November - December 7th, 2008

Made for: my sister for Christmas 2008

Modification: I made minor modifications. I couldn't get the exterior body pieces to match up with the band pieces without making the outer pleat deeper. I don't know where I went wrong. I redid that part twice and ended up with the body part being too wide, therefore I fudged it by making the outer pleat deeper.

Pleat
Pleats on the fronts...

There is no kind of closure suggested in the pattern, but I added a magnetic snap in the band section.

Snap closure
The added magnetic snap... And the fantastic lining fabric!!!

Also, the last part of the instructions tell you to sew through the outer and interior fabric just beneath the band. Tis is to keep the band flat and neat. I couldn't do it on the machine for the life of me. I pinned really carefully, I sewed really carefully, and even with that, the fabrics shifted and I got this ugly and uneven seam on the inside. After having tried twice - and having ripped that seam twice - I opted to sew it by hand. I'm very glad I did. Sure, it took some time, but not more time than what I had already spent swearing at the machine...

Band
The band and handle attached to the outer bag.

Thoughts: I'm really happy with the finished product. And my sister says she loves it!

I can see myself making this bag again.

I did have some problems with making the gussets. The ones on the outer bag ended up just fine, but the ones made for the lining got a bit crooked. One side ended up almost going through the bottom of one of the pockets. I don't know if I was sloppy or if the pattern is supposed to be that tight.

Gusset shape
One of the gussets at the bottom/side.

The bag has three pockets on the inside; one large and two smaller ones (actually one pocket panel divided in half by a seam). The bag is quite big and therefore the pockets end up big and deep. I think if I make this again, I'll make at least one of the pockets more shallow so I wouldn't have to dig as deep for my keys...

Interior
Believe me, there are three pockets here along the sides...

The bag turned out great, looks like any of my bags with the cat hair all over :) What kind of interfacing did you use? I have a hard time finding the right one because you can't get Pellon in Germany, do you have it in Sweden?

And don't worry about the pleats, I have a feeling that all pattern with pleats are kind of off, at least in my experience. I never can get the same pleats and the outer body always seams to big or to small for the band
